Every fourth year the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) brings together scouts from around the globe to experience new adventures and cultures and to form long-lasting friendships. Over 40 000 scouts from almost 150 nations are expected to gather for the Jamboree in West Virginia, USA, from 22 July to 2 August 2019.
Although it may seem that the summer of 2019 is still in the distant future, the registration for the Finnish Contingent is already here! The registration for Finnish scouts is open between 26.11.2017-14.2.2018.
The Jamboree is by far the most international scouting event in the world. Theme of this Jamboree is “Unlock a New World”. It invites scouts from all over the world to unlock new adventures, new cultures and new friendships. The Jamboree site, the Summit Bechtel Reserve, provides incredible surroundings for adventurous activities: zip lines will be flying participants over the camping site, huge man-made climbing rocks will be available as well as several lakes offering a variety of aquatic activities to keep you entertained. Everything is bigger in America!
Before the Jamboree begins the Finnish Contingent organizes a week–long optional tour where participants visit some of the most famous sights of the US East Coast with other Finnish scouts. Would you fancy seeing the New York City?
Funding your trip to the WSJ
Jamborees are rather expensive for participants. Therefore, many Finnish troops who are planning on joining the Jamboree have already started their fundraising projects. If you have not started yet, there is no better moment than now! There are good instructions and printable marketing materials available on the web site of the Finnish Contingent: jamboree.fi/materiaalit.
There are many ways to raise funds:selling your old games, clothes, toys and books at the flea market, providing gardening services or helping local shops with their inventory. Use your imagination! We also recommend that you contact local Lions Club and Rotary members, and any other active societies for financial support. If there are more people travelling to the Jamboree from the same town and area you can collaborate and innovate together!
Registration and more information
It is possible to apply for various scholarships for the camp. Details about this can be found at the scout district website at päpa.fi as well as the Finnish Guides and Scouts website at leirimatkalle.partio.fi.
